HOW TO VERIFY SAFELY

You can check whether the person on Discord is real only if they have shared a photo or selfie of themselves. Crop that face and search it on the public web: if the same face turns up under another name, the account is almost certainly not who it claims to be.

If all you have is an anime avatar and a username, a face search cannot help, and that absence is worth noticing in itself.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Nobody can search inside Discord, and Trace does not either. Servers, DMs and member lists sit behind a login. Trace takes one photograph of a face and shows public pages and profiles where that same face appears, each with a similarity score and a link you can open. It returns no names, addresses, phone numbers or records of any kind.

WHAT IS PUBLIC AND WHAT IS PRIVATE ON DISCORD

Discord is built around usernames and avatars, not real faces. Most people use a game character, a drawing or a meme as their picture, and that is normal.

What you may have:

• A username and display name, which can be changed at any time.
• An avatar, usually not a real face.
• Photos or selfies sent in DMs or posted in a server. These are the only thing a face search can work with.
• Links to other accounts they have chosen to share.

Messages in servers and DMs are not on the open web, so no search engine can index them.

COMMON DISCORD SCAM PATTERNS

• The online relationship that never goes on camera. Months of chatting, voice notes perhaps, but video is always impossible. The photos they share look polished and never quite match a live moment.
• Gift and Nitro scams. A link to "claim free Nitro" or a gift from a friend leads to a page that asks you to log in, handing over your account.
• Fake "staff" messages. Someone claiming to be from Discord or a server's moderators says your account is about to be banned and you must verify through their link. Discord staff do not contact you through random DMs to ask for your password.
• The move to another app. A new contact pushes you to continue on a different messaging app, away from server moderators and reporting tools.

A discord scam usually wants your account, your money or your trust. A discord fake account can want all three.

FREE FIRST STEPS

1. Save the photo they sent. Download it or take a screenshot.
2. Crop to the face. One face, facing the camera, with little background.
3. Try Google Lens and Yandex Images. Both are free and look for copies of the picture. A selfie lifted from someone else's public profile often shows up.

These tools search the image, not the face. If the photo has been cropped, mirrored or filtered, they can miss it.

HOW A FACE SEARCH HELPS WITH A DISCORD CATFISH

A discord catfish borrows someone else's face. Trace matches the face, not the image file, so it can find the same person in a completely different photograph. If the selfie you were sent belongs to someone with a public profile elsewhere, under a different name and a different life, the results can show that.

A NOTE FOR YOUNGER READERS

Some adults pretend to be teenagers online to get close to young people. They may say they are your age, share photos that are not theirs, ask you to keep the friendship secret, and try to move you to a private app.

If someone makes you uncomfortable, asks for photos, asks you to keep secrets or wants to meet in person, tell a trusted adult, such as a parent, carer or teacher. You will not be in trouble. You can also block and report the account in Discord.

HOW TO READ A CLEAN OR EMPTY RESULT

A result is a similarity score between two images, never a statement about who somebody is. Close relatives, twins and lookalikes can score highly, so open the links and compare for yourself.

An empty result means nothing was found on the part of the public web Trace can reach. It is not evidence that the photo is genuine or that the person has no online presence. Many people never post their face publicly. Weigh the result alongside what you have seen: a person who shares only polished photos and never appears live is still a risk.

VERIFY, DON'T STALK

Use a face search to check the person you are actually talking to. Do not use it to track down members of a server, unmask an anonymous user who has done nothing to you, or find someone who has blocked you. Online anonymity is part of how Discord works, and most people have good reasons for it.
