To find your doppelganger, run a face search with a clear photo of yourself and look at the public pages where similar faces appear. The results are ranked by a similarity score, and the high-scoring faces that belong to other people are, quite literally, your lookalikes.

It is a fun search. It is also a search that returns real people, so it helps to know what the results mean and how to treat them.

SHORT ANSWER

A face search compares your face with faces on the public web and shows the closest ones. Some results may be you, from photos you had forgotten about. Others will be strangers who share your features. Those strangers are your doppelgangers. The score measures how similar two faces look, never whether two people are the same person or related.

WHAT A LOOKALIKE SEARCH ACTUALLY DOES

Trace is a reverse face search over the publicly accessible web. You upload one photograph of a face. Trace returns public pages and profiles where a matching face appears, each with a similarity score and a link you can open.

Trace matches the face, not the image file. That is why it can show you someone else entirely: it is comparing facial features, not looking for copies of your picture. Close relatives, twins and people who merely look alike can all score highly. For a verification search that is a caveat. For a doppelganger search it is the whole point.

Trace returns no names, addresses, phone numbers or records, only public URLs and a number. It cannot search inside apps, private profiles or anything behind a login, so the lookalikes you see are only those whose photos are on the public web.

WHAT IS PUBLIC AND WHAT IS PRIVATE

Only faces on publicly accessible pages can appear. That typically means news photos, public profiles, event galleries, blogs and similar pages. A person whose photos sit behind a private account will not show up, however alike you look. So "who do I look like" really means "who do I look like, among people with public photos".

1. Try Google Lens. Upload your photo and scroll through the visually similar images. It leans towards matching the whole picture, so you will see similar poses and backgrounds as often as similar faces.

1. Try Yandex Images. It is more tolerant of visual similarity and sometimes surfaces people with a similar look.

1. Ask friends. It sounds obvious, but people are good at spotting which famous face you resemble.

Both free tools search the image file, not the face. They are good for a first look, but they are not built to find someone who looks like me in a different photo.

HOW TO TAKE THE RIGHT PHOTO

Your photo shapes your results more than anything else.

• Use your own photo. This search is about your face.
• Face the camera. A frontal shot with both eyes visible works best.
• Use good, even light. Avoid harsh shadows and backlit windows.
• Keep it to one face. Crop out friends and busy backgrounds.
• Skip heavy filters. Beauty filters and strong edits change the features being compared.
• Remove sunglasses and hats that hide the eyes or hairline.

If your first results feel off, try a second photo from a different day. Different light and expression can surface different lookalikes.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE RESULTS

You may see a mix of things:

• Your own photos. Old profile pictures, team pages or event shots you had forgotten.
• Famous lookalikes. Actors, athletes or public figures whose photos are widely published.
• Strangers on public pages. Ordinary people whose pictures happen to be online.
• Relatives. Family members can score highly because they share features.

HOW TO READ THE SCORE

A high score between you and a stranger means your faces look alike. Nothing more. It is not evidence that you are related, that you share ancestry, or that the other person is you. Treat the score as a ranking of resemblance.

HOW TO READ AN EMPTY RESULT

An empty result means nothing was found on the part of the public web Trace can reach. It does not mean you have no lookalikes, or that your own photos are not online elsewhere. It may simply mean the photo was hard to read, or that your closest lookalikes do not have public pictures. A clearer, frontal photo is the first thing to try.

PLAY FAIR WITH THE PEOPLE YOU FIND

Your lookalikes are real people. They did not ask to be part of your search.

• Do not contact them just because they look like you.
• Do not share their photos in a way they would not want, such as posting side-by-side comparisons that tag or mock them.
• Do not use their resemblance to you to pretend to be them, or to let anyone think they are you.
• Do not upload a photo of someone else to find their lookalikes without their agreement.

A famous doppelganger is easy to enjoy. With a private individual, keep the result to yourself.
