FACEBOOK DATING FAKE PROFILES
HOW TO CHECK A MATCH

SEARCH THIS FACE NOW

Facebook Dating fake profiles exist, and the two checks that catch most of them are simple: find out whether the match's photos belong to someone else, and watch whether they try to move you off the app or towards money. A real match can pass both; a fake one usually fails at least one within a few days.

SHORT ANSWER

Being inside Facebook does not make a Dating profile real. A fake Facebook account can carry a fake Dating profile just as easily as a real account carries a real one. Treat a match on Facebook Dating the way you would treat a match on any other app: check the face, then judge the behaviour.

Many people trust Facebook Dating more because it sits inside an app they already use. When Meta launched the feature, it described the Dating profile as separate from the main Facebook profile. Check Facebook's Help Centre for how that works in your country today.

In practice, the name, age and photos you see were chosen by whoever created the account, and a scammer can fill it with photos taken from someone else's public social media.

BOT OR PERSON

Some fake matches follow a script. Signs you may be talking to a script rather than a person:

  • Replies that ignore what you said. You ask a direct question and get a compliment or a new topic.
  • The same lines in a fixed order. A greeting, a compliment, a question about where you live, then a link or a phone number.
  • Answers arrive instantly at any hour, with the same tone every time.
  • Matches that seem far away or say they are only in your area for a short time, often with a reason they cannot meet.

A quick test: ask something that needs a real, specific answer, such as what they had for lunch or what the photo in their third picture shows. A script struggles with that. A person, scammer or not, answers.

CHECK THE PHOTOS

The photo check works whether you are facing a bot or a person running several profiles.

  1. Screenshot every photo on the Dating profile. Nobody can search inside Facebook Dating from outside, including Trace, so the screenshots are what you work with.
  2. Crop each one to the face. One person, front-on, as sharp as possible.
  3. Run Google Lens first. It is free and finds copies of that exact picture, such as the same photo on a model's or influencer's account.
  4. Search the face with Trace. Trace matches the face, not the file, so it can find the same person in a different photo. That matters when a scammer has flipped, cropped or filtered a stolen picture so image search misses it.

Trace returns public pages where that face appears, each with a similarity score from 50 to 100 and a link you open yourself. It returns no names, addresses or phone numbers. If you type the name your match gave you, the one-sentence verdict at the top of an unlocked result says whether the pages agree with it. A paid search that finds nothing returns its credit.

If the match later sends a "live" selfie, you can put it next to a profile photo in the free face comparison. It gives one similarity score and stores nothing.

READING WHAT YOU FIND

  • The same face under another name. The photos are borrowed. Stop the conversation and report the profile.
  • The same face on stock-photo sites or many unrelated profiles. The face is being reused. Treat the profile as fake.
  • One consistent identity that matches what your match told you. A good sign, not a guarantee. Keep going with the other checks.
  • Nothing found. An empty result means nothing turned up on the part of the public web Trace can reach. It is not evidence the person is genuine. If the photos look too smooth or perfect, see how to tell if a photo of a person is AI generated.

Scores: 70–80 is a possible match worth a second look, 80–90 is strong, 90 and above is near-certain. A score compares two images; relatives and lookalikes can score high, so open the pages and judge for yourself.

RED FLAGS IN THE CHAT

The US Federal Trade Commission's page on romance scams lists the patterns to watch for:

  • They want to move the conversation off the platform quickly, to email, phone or another messaging app.
  • They claim strong feelings early.
  • They cannot meet in person, often because they work abroad or somewhere remote.
  • They ask for money, for medical bills, travel or visa fees.
  • They name a payment method that is hard to reverse: wire transfer, gift cards, payment apps or cryptocurrency.
  • They create urgency so you pay before you think.

The FTC's main rule is never to send money or gifts to someone you have not met in person. Stories about being a deployed soldier follow their own pattern, covered in military romance scam.

WHEN THEY ASK TO MOVE TO WHATSAPP OR MESSENGER

A push to continue elsewhere is the moment to slow down. Once you leave Facebook Dating, you leave the place where you can report that profile, and the scammer gets a channel they control for links and payment requests. A real match who likes you will usually wait until you have spoken on a short video call. If you do move, the same photo check applies to their new profile picture.

REPORT, BLOCK, AND IF YOU PAID

Report the profile inside Facebook Dating and block it; check Facebook's Help Centre for the current steps. If you already sent money:

  1. Contact your bank, card company or the crypto exchange straight away and ask for it to be stopped or refunded.
  2. Report the fraud. In the US that is ReportFraud.ftc.gov; elsewhere, your national police or fraud-reporting service.
  3. Keep screenshots of the profile and the chat.

Be wary of anyone who later offers to recover your money for a fee. For the full step-by-step if you are still unsure, see am I being catfished, and for how other apps compare, how to spot a fake Tinder profile.

USE THE CHECK TO PROTECT YOURSELF

This check is for confirming that someone you are about to trust is the person in their photos. It is not for finding a match's main Facebook account, their address or the people in their life, and it is not a way to watch an ex or a partner. Once you know the photos are genuine, stop. The person in a scammer's photos is usually a victim too. Anyone can have their face removed from Trace's index and blocked from being added again at traceaifacescan.app/remove-my-photos, with no account and no ID.

FAQ

Are there fake profiles on Facebook Dating?

Yes. A Dating profile is created from a Facebook account, and a Facebook account can be fake. Check whether the match's photos appear elsewhere under another name, and watch for a quick move off the app or any request for money.

Are there bots on Facebook Dating?

Some fake matches follow a script: replies that ignore your questions, the same lines in a fixed order, and a link or phone number early on. Ask something only a real person could answer specifically, and report the profile if the replies stay generic.

Why does my Facebook Dating match want to move to WhatsApp?

Sometimes it is convenience, but the FTC lists moving off the platform quickly as a romance scam sign. Stay in the app until you have had a short video call, and be stricter if the move comes with talk of money or investing.

Can Trace search Facebook Dating profiles?

No. Dating profiles are behind a login and cannot be searched from outside. Screenshot your match's photos, crop the face and search it on the public web to see whether it belongs to someone else.
