# FIND SOMEONE BY PHOTO.

You have a picture of someone and want to know who they are or where else they appear online. This guide answers three questions honestly: **is it actually possible**, which site is good at what, and what it means when nothing comes back.

## SHORT ANSWER

**Finding someone by photo is possible under one condition: their face has to leave a trace on the public web.** No tool can find a face that was never published anywhere. The right order is: search the **image** first with Google Lens, Yandex or TinEye — it is free, and if the photo was published elsewhere that is enough. If that fails, use **reverse face search**, which compares the face rather than the file and can find the same person in a completely different picture. Every result is a similarity score, not proof of identity. And **an empty result does not mean the person does not exist — only that they leave no public trace.**

## CAN YOU FIND SOMEONE BY PHOTO?

The question gets two kinds of answers online: "impossible" or "just upload it here". Both are wrong. The real answer is a list of conditions, because what decides the outcome is less the tool than **the state of that face on the internet**.

Three things have to be true at the same time:

- **The face has been published on a public page.** A news site, a company team page, an open social profile, a forum. Search engines only see what they can index; private accounts, closed groups and messaging apps are entirely outside this search.

- **The photo you have is good enough.** Facing the camera, alone in the frame, sharp and unobstructed. A tiny profile picture enlarged from a blurry screenshot will defeat the best tool.

- **You use the right kind of tool.** Image search engines look for the *file*; face search engines look for the *face*. If you want a different photo of the same person, image search cannot help by definition.

If all three hold, your odds are good. If one is missing, it barely matters which site you try.

## TWO DIFFERENT QUESTIONS

"Reverse image search a person" usually squeezes two separate questions into one sentence, and choosing the wrong tool starts here:

- **"Where else has this photo been published?"** — tracking the same image, or a crop of it. The right question for catching a stolen profile picture or a stock photo. **Image search** is very good at this.

- **"Whose face is this, and which other photos is it in?"** — finding the same person in another frame, taken on a different day in different light. Only **face search** answers this.

That is why Google Images "not finding the person" is not a malfunction: it never asks the second question. Google does not show results that connect a face to other photos on the open web as a matter of policy, so an empty Lens result means "I don't answer that", not "this person isn't online". The technical difference is covered in [why Google Images can't find people](https://traceaifacescan.app/blog/reverse-image-search-vs-face-search/).

## SITES THAT FIND PEOPLE BY PHOTO

There is no single "best site", because each tool answers a different question. Start with the free ones and move to paid face search only when they come back empty.

A side-by-side of the three face search services — prices, payment and where each one is better — is in the [PimEyes alternative comparison](https://traceaifacescan.app/pimeyes-alternative/), including where the competition wins.

## CAN YOU DO IT FOR FREE?

Short answer: **image search is free, face search is not.**

Google Lens, Yandex and TinEye cost nothing and are genuinely good at finding copies of a photo. For checking a suspicious profile that is often enough, because most scammers do not create photos — they *steal* them, and the original usually sits somewhere.

Face search charges, for a reason: every search spends real compute over an enormous face index. Sites promising free people search by photo usually either hide the result behind a paywall or run an image search and call it face search. The quickest way to tell is to give it a *different* photo of the same person and see whether it finds them.

Trace is not free either, but **you can look before you pay**: a scan without credits returns a blurred preview of what it actually found, so you know whether there is anything to unlock. One credit opens one search; the smallest pack is five searches for $4, with no subscription and credits that never expire.

## CAN AI FIND SOMEONE BY PHOTO?

"AI face search" covers two developments, and one makes this easier while the other makes it harder.

**Easier: turning a face into numbers.** Modern face search treats a face as a **set of measurements** rather than an image — eye spacing, nose-to-chin ratio, cheekbone geometry — and compares that vector with the vectors of faces in its index. The distance becomes a similarity score. That is why different clothes, different lighting or a few years do not break a match. Old-style image search could not do this: it compared pixels, not faces.

**Harder: generating faces from scratch.** An AI-generated face has no history online. Neither image search nor face search can find it anywhere, because there is nowhere to find it. In 2026 a serious share of fake profiles no longer steal photos, they generate them — which is exactly why. How to spot one is covered in [is this person a scammer?](https://traceaifacescan.app/blog/is-this-person-a-scammer/)

One more caution: an "AI" label does not mean a tool identifies people. The most advanced model tells you *how similar* two faces are, never *who* someone is.

## STEP BY STEP: SEARCHING FOR SOMEONE BY PHOTO

The order below goes from free to paid and from easy to hard. If a step works, you can stop.

1. **Prepare the photo.** Pick a face looking at the camera, alone and unobstructed; crop one person out of a group shot. The face itself should be at least 200 pixels wide. If you have several photos of the person, try each — two frames often return two different sets of results.

2. **Search the image.** Upload it to Google Lens and Yandex Images. If the photo was published elsewhere, the answer is usually here, and it costs nothing.

3. **Read what surrounds the face.** A sign, a business name, a jersey, a badge or a username watermark, typed into a search engine, often gets you further than the face itself.

4. **Search the face and read the score.** If the first three steps came back empty, use reverse face search. Read results together with their score: the band means more than any single result.

Reading the score matters more than choosing the tool. In Trace every result carries a score from 70 to 100, and the bands were measured on live searches:

- **90–100** — the band where genuine matches appear.

- **80–89** — strong resemblance. Confirm with a second photo before you decide anything.

- **70–79** — possible, but in practice most of this band is people who merely look alike.

- **Below 70** — never shown. Searches with no genuine match topped out at 86, so showing anything under 70 would mean presenting dozens of strangers as "results".

If you think the person has an Instagram account, the platform-specific tricks are in [find an Instagram account by photo](https://traceaifacescan.app/blog/find-instagram-account-by-photo/).

## IF NOTHING COMES BACK

If all four steps are empty, you still have information — not the absence of it. The likely reasons:

- **The face does not appear on the open web.** The person uses private accounts or never shares photos publicly. That does not mean they do not exist.

- **The photo is not good enough.** Angle, resolution or an obstruction left nothing measurable. Try another frame.

- **The face was generated.** An AI-generated face has no history. If a stranger sent you a flawless, studio-lit photo that matches nothing anywhere, the emptiness itself is a warning sign.

## THE LEGAL LINE

Face data is a special category of personal data under both the EU GDPR (Article 9) and Türkiye's KVKK (Article 6), and processing it normally requires explicit consent. In practice:

- **Clearly fine:** searching your own photo — see [where is my photo used online?](https://traceaifacescan.app/blog/where-are-my-photos-used-online/)

- **Legitimate and defensible:** checking whether a profile picture sent to you is stolen, to protect yourself from a scam.

- **Not permitted:** using the result to locate, monitor or harass someone; using it for hiring, tenancy, lending or insurance decisions; using it against minors.

If you would rather your own face were not in an index, you can [remove it from Trace permanently](https://traceaifacescan.app/remove-my-photos): no account, no email, no ID.

## FAQ

### Can you find someone by photo?

Yes, but only if that face leaves a trace on the public web. Search engines see the pages they can index; private accounts, closed groups and messaging apps are outside the search. Three things decide the result: the face being published on a public page, the photo being sharp and facing the camera, and using the right kind of tool — finding a different photo of the same person takes face search, not image search.

### Can you reverse image search a person?

You can reverse image search the *photo* of a person. Google Lens, Yandex and TinEye will find where that exact image, or a crop of it, was published — which is often enough to catch a stolen profile picture. They will not connect a different photo of the same person, and Google does not show face-matching results as a matter of policy. To find the same person in another photo you need reverse face search.

### Is there a free way to find someone by photo?

Partly. Google Lens, Yandex Images and TinEye are free and find copies of a photo. Face search, which finds the same person in a different photo, is paid because every search runs over a large face index. On Trace, a scan without credits shows a blurred preview of what was actually found, so you can see whether there is anything before you pay; unlocking a search costs one credit.

### Can AI find someone by photo?

AI face search turns a face into a set of measurements and compares them with faces in its index; the distance becomes a similarity score. Because it compares facial geometry rather than pixels, different clothes, light or age do not break a match. But the score only measures resemblance: no model identifies people, and a result is not proof of identity.

### Will the person know I searched their photo?

No. The search runs over publicly accessible web pages; no notification is sent to the person, their profile is not touched, and no trace is left on any platform. On Trace you do not create an account, and the photo you upload is deleted after 30 days or the moment you delete the scan.

### Why can't Google Images find the person?

Google Images and Lens look for visual similarity, not facial identity. They find the same file, or a close crop of it, if it was published online; they will not connect a photo of the same person taken on a different day in different clothes, and Google suppresses face-matching results as a matter of policy. That makes it good at finding a stolen profile picture and bad at finding a human being.
